Health Connector Coverage for DACA Recipients Update

December 16, 2024

Background

Starting November 1, people who are in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program became eligible for Affordable Care Act coverage through the Health Connector. These individuals are also known as Dreamers. On December 9, a judge blocked that coverage in 19 states. Massachusetts is not one of the states in the judge’s ruling. For now, the Health Connector can continue to offer ACA coverage to DACA recipients and plans to do so.

Talking Points

  • The decision by a federal judge to block DACA recipients from Affordable Care Act coverage does not include Massachusetts, and for now the Health Connector will continue to offer access to coverage to DACA recipients.
  • For the first time, DACA recipients are able to access help paying for their health insurance through the Health Connector.
  • If someone has DACA status and is interested in getting coverage, we strongly encourage them to find a local Certified Assister (Navigator or Certified Application Counselor) or contact the Health Connector to get help.
  • Updating an application requires multiple steps, but Certified Assisters and the call center are prepared to help people through that process and can provide help in a variety of languages.
  • The deadline for coverage to start the new year is December 23, and Dreamers are encouraged to apply and get help, if necessary, to be covered to start 2025.
